trauma
Trauma is any adverse event that causes extreme or ongoing emotional distress.
Trauma is not limited to natural disasters, war experiences, or violent crime, but also includes childhood abuse, intimate partner violence, medical illness, and sexual assault. Trauma and emotional pain can often cause us to become disconnected from ourselves. For some, this can manifest as difficulty in connecting with others, whereas some might develop self-destructive behaviors to manage the pain.

The body’s trauma response may progress to PTSD, which include symptoms such as intrusive or negative thoughts, dissociation (e.g. “zoning out,” out-of-body experiences, flashbacks, etc.), avoidance of traumatic reminders, inappropriate guilt or shame, irritability, loss of interest, impaired concentration or memory, and sleep problems. Mood disturbances associated with trauma can often manifest as anxiety or depression. When someone suffers from PTSD, they feel unsafe, on edge, or are easy to startle; their body is trapped in the fight, flight, or freeze response even if they are no longer in active psychological or physical danger.
The key to treating trauma is to re-establish a sense of safety and control over your emotional and physiological experiences. I will teach you skills to emotionally regulate, change negative beliefs, and repair the mind-body connection using somatic approaches that will help you to tap into the innate healing power of your own body.
LGBTQIA+ experience
The LGBTQIA+ community continues to experience many systemic challenges in our heteronormative, cisnormative society. In addition, interpersonal conflict may occur within families or with significant others due to misconceptions and conflicting values related to marginalized sexual and gender identities. Unfortunately, this means that LGBTQIA+ individuals typically enter therapy with an additional layer of trauma or shame related to the response of others and society to their queer identities.
I provide LGBTQIA+ affirmative therapy that highlights and validates your various identities and empowers you to fully explore and embrace your authentic self—whoever that may be.
cultural stress
Cultural stress describes the pressure we may feel as we either adjust to a new culture or engage in a balancing act between two or more different cultures.
Bicultural/multicultural issues are those that relate to identification with two or more different cultures, typically of different values and social expectations, and the conflict that can arise between the mismatch. Included in this is acculturation—the process of adjusting to a new culture, such as after immigration. Intergenerational conflict and dysfunctional family dynamics can occur when differences in values are irreconcilable between first-generation parents and American-born children.
I am trained to assist in these issues using multicultural and family therapy, where we will focus on increasing effective communication, emotional connection, and boundary setting.
